• Gracin fan will be front and center at State concert

OK, she admits it.

Magen Trask, a member of the programming committee at the
State Theatre, had a small ulterior motive when she included
Josh Gracin in a list of suggested acts to bring to the
State.

”I am a Josh Gracin fan,” she
confessed in a recent interview. ”(And) I’m
the only country fan on the board of directors.”

But Trask, 26, of Bay City, wasn’t just thinking of
herself.

”Country sells in this area. It really
does,” she said referencing last year’s
sold-out Craig Morgan concerts at the State.

Asked why she likes Gracin - who performs at 7 and 9:30
p.m. May 8 at the State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave. - Trask
said there are many reasons.

”Besides the fact that he’s handsome and
he’s country?” she asked.

There’s also the fact that he’s fresh and new. An
”American Idol” fan, Trask remembers
two performances that really stood out to her when Gracin
sang in season two of the hit Fox television show.

She liked it when he sang ”Then You Can Tell Me
Goodbye” by Neal McCoy and thought his
performance of Garth Brooks’ ”Ain’t
Goin’ Down (’Til the Sun Comes Up)” was
a turning point for Gracin in the competition. Gracin ended
up finishing fourth and has since gone on to have hits like
”Nothin’ to Lose,” ”I
Want to Live” and ”Stay With Me (Brass
Bed).”

Gracin, a 27-year-old native of Westland, Mich., was
enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps when he performed on
”Idol” and was the first performer to
bring country music to the Citibank Platinum Credit Card pop-oriented show.

The Military Is Accepting More Convicted Felons | KXNet.com North …

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Source: KXMC (Original Article)

This is interesting, and is an idea that makes sense on many levels:

The Army admitted about one-fourth more recruits last year with a record of legal problems ranging from felony convictions and serious misdemeanors to drug crimes and traffic offenses, as pressure to increase the size of U.S. ground forces led the military to grant more waivers for criminal conduct, according to new data released yesterday.

Such “conduct waivers” for Army recruits rose from 8,129 in fiscal 2006 to 10,258 in fiscal 2007. For Marine Corps recruits, they increased from 16,969 to 17,413.

In particular, the Army accepted more than double the number of applicants with convictions for felony crimes such as burglary, grand larceny and aggravated assault, rising from 249 to 511, while the corresponding number for the Marines increased by two-thirds, from 208 to 350. The vast majority of such convictions stem from juvenile offenses. Most involved theft, but a handful involved sexual assault and terrorist threats, and there were three cases of involuntary manslaughter.

Granted, the washout rate for those with past felonies is a bit higher than for the rest of the recruits. But many of them make it just fine and it gives them a second chance in life. The structure and discipline of the military and the educational and training opportunities it offers is something that many of those kids wouldn’t ever see on the streets

I think this is a good thing. There’s nothing wrong with offering those kids a chance to fix a broken part of their lives. If they don’t make it, so be it. If they do they may well be able to move on to a more successful life after the military than would ever have been possible otherwise. This may come as a shock to some of those in the higher up political circles, but not everyone can afford college

So….note to the critics concerning this program: Shut up. Give those kids Visa Credit Card the chance to put their destinies …continue reading

Blue Jays get jump on Mids before 16,042By BILL WAGNER, Staff Writer
Published April 20, 2008 Navy head coach Richie Meade saw his carefully crafted game-plan fall completely apart during yesterday's lacrosse game against Johns Hopkins.
Meade knew Navy needed to control the faceoffs in order to gain a possession advantage, but the Hopkins duo of Stephen Peyser and Matt Dolente dominated that area of the game to the tune of 13-8. Meade thought his goaltender would need to make 12-14 saves against a Hopkins team that shoots the ball extremely well. Starter Tommy Phelan only managed to stop seven shots.Meade thought it was important to grab an early lead to get some positive momentum going. The Midshipmen fell behind quickly and had to play catch-up the whole way.Senior attackman Kevin Huntley led the way as seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins jumped to an early lead and steadily pulled away to a convincing 12-5 victory over No. 10 Navy yesterday in Annapolis. A crowd of 16,042, second-largest to watch a lacrosse game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, saw the Midshipmen suffer their 34th consecutive loss in the annual series."I thought we needed to play at a much higher level coming out of the blocks. I thought Hopkins played especially well in the first quarter. They shot the ball really well and seized the lead," Meade said.Huntley got Hopkins started by scooping up a loose ball in front of the net and firing a behind-the-back shot past Phelan. The Midshipmen committed a pair of penalties in the opening stanza and paid the price as the Blue Jays scored a pair of extra man Lawyers in NSW beginning with P Page 1 goals to take a 4-0 lead …continue reading

Mids clinch Patriot League tourney spot in first season
By BOB HOUGH For The Capital
Published April 13, 2008 Three minutes into yesterday's home game with Bucknell, the farthest thing on anyone's mind associated with Navy women's lacrosse was the Patriot League tournament.
Needing a win to clinch a berth in the tournament, the Mids watched the Bison score the game's first three goals, but were able to bounce back and eventually pulled away for an 18-11 win at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy actually trailed 6-4 late in the first half, but scored the final three goals of the half and the first two of the second to take control. "I guess it's not how you begin, it's how you end," Navy coach Cindy Timchal said."We just had to make some adjustments. They came right down at us early and we settled down and got things going our way as the game went on."Plebe Katrina Nietsch led Navy with six goals, including a pair during the 5-0 run that spanned the final two minutes of the first half and the first minute of the second."Katrina had a solid performance today. We couldn't have asked for anything more from a first-year player. Bucknell really didn't have an answer for her," Timchal said.Nietsch scored her first and second goals during a 10-minute stretch in the first half that helped Navy fight back from the early three-goal deficit, then scored 19 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the first half to give Navy the lead for good, 7-6. She added a pair of goals in the second half and now has 30 on the year."We didn't let the start faze us. We've been down before and I think we knew early on in the game that we weren't going to let that get local court interest rates us down," she said.Meg Decker added …continue reading

Taking witness stand, man accused ofmurderdetails military training

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Source: The Register-Guard (Original Article)

Tyke Thomas Supanchick, accused of the shotgun slaying of his estranged wife, took the witness stand Friday in his own defense, describing a sheltered upbringing and details of his military career, but offering no details yet on what happened the morning he killed his wife in 2005.

Supanchick, 30, took the stand on the fourth day of a death penalty murder trial expected to last up to three weeks. His attorney, Randall Vogt of Portland, methodically questioned Supanchick about his six years in the Navy.

Prosecutors rested their case Thursday after three days of testimony, arguing that Supanchick committed “cold-blooded murder” when he bound 25-year-old Kelly Supanchick’s hands and shot her four times with a shotgun on Dec. 23, 2005.

Tyke Supanchick does not deny killing his estranged wife, but Vogt said he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and acted on “autopilot” when police tried to break down the door of his wife’s duplex on the 400 block of Morningside Drive in Eugene.

Vogt laid the groundwork for Supanchick’s testimony by showing the jury a 15-minute video of raw, unnarrated news footage depicting the chaotic scene at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, when a hijacked Boeing 757 plowed into the west side of the building, killing 184 people. Supanchick, wearing a closed-cropped, military style haircut and a black suit, visibly tensed up as the video played and looked away.

When it was over, Vogt asked Supanchick how watching the video made him feel.

With a quaver in his voice, he stammered, “It brought back … It made me feel … It brought back memories.”

Supanchick at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks was a Pentagon tour guide, one of the duties of the Navy Ceremonial Guard in which he served for two years. He was getting ready to go to work when he looked out the window from his barracks across the Potomac River and saw the billowing St George No Annual Fee Credit Card smoke.
