Luxury Institute Survey: High Net-Worth Consumers Rank the Most Prestigious Luxury Audio Brands: Ban

High net-worth consumers rated Bang and
Olufsen the most prestigious luxury audio brand in the 2008 Luxury Brand
Status Index (LBSI) survey from the independent New York City-based Luxury
Institute (www.LuxuryInstitute.com). Respondents who would recommend Bang
and Olufsen say “their reputation is unsurpassed,” they have “great
technology and superior sounds.” Bose Corp and Bowers and Wilkins came in
second and third respectively.

“Audio is yet another category with dozens of brands but only a few elite
standouts,” said Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute.
“Interestingly, newcomer Steinway Lyngdorf catapulted itself into the top
five rated brands by combining the revered piano brand name with what
wealthy consumers say is ‘top-shelf quality’ and design. This is the type
of innovation luxury audio consumers have been craving.”

“Our surveys are conducted with independent panels weighted to reflect
national results. The results are tabulated by external analytical experts
to ensure a level of transparency and objectivity that has earned the trust
of consumers, the industry and the media. We strive continuously to
reinforce the trust that allows us to facilitate a constructive dialogue
between wealthy consumers and luxury brands via our surveys,” added
Pedraza.

X-Files meeting

X-Files creator Chris Carter, writer Frank Spotnitz and other crew members gathered Wednesday to discuss the TV series and upcoming film.

“It’s true to Mulder and Scully, who they are and where they would be at this point in their lives,” Spotnitz said at the William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles.

The Fox drama, which aired from 1993 to 2002, starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigating paranormal reports. After the 1998 release of The X-Files: Fight the Future, plans for another film were grounded in 2005. Carter, who also is the director of the new movie, said it takes place in the present. The film, as yet untitled, is due out July 25.

Steinmetz: Official's call negates great games

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Source: Examiner.com (Original Article)

SAN FRANCISCO
(Map, News)
-
The worst part about referee Bob Delaney’s offensive foul call on Monta Ellis at the end of the Warriors-Los Angeles Lakers game Monday wasn’t necessarily the call itself.

No. The worst part is that fans are talking about an official’s questionable late whistle instead of all the other stuff that happened during two of the most competitive, scintillating NBA games of the season. It stinks that 90 percent of the discussion regarding a wonderful back-to-back miniseries between the Warriors and Lakers will focus on the final three seconds instead of the previous 95 minutes, 57 seconds.

Not to mention that every fan at Oracle Arena or watching on television was deprived of seeing what would have happened on that final Warriors possession in overtime. Thinking about the unfulfilling conclusion to the Lakers’ 123-119 overtime win, I couldn’t help but think that Warriors fans got stuck with the most brutal kind of loss.

Indeed, it would have been significantly more palatable had Baron Davis missed a wide-open 3-pointer at the buzzer that could have won the game.

Even Kobe Bryant making a steal in that situation would have been less infuriating.

Of all the things said in the postgame analysis, the one I disagree with most, however, is the notion that the play should have been a no-call.

It couldn’t be a no-call, even though everyone agrees players — and not the officials — should determine the outcome of the game. But when Derek Fisher interjects himself into a play like that, starts forcing contact and bodies get strewn, it’s impossible to not make a call.

This isn’t rugby. An official can’t let that kind of blatant physicality go regardless of whether the game is on the line or not.

Taking a look at the replay, it’s clear that the seeds of Delaney’s call were planted even before Stephen Jackson received the ball to inbound Domain name search it at halfcourt. Bryant and Davis …continue reading

With the Warriors and Jackson, expect the unexpected

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Source: NBA - ESPN (Original Article)

Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty ImagesStephen Jackson hit the clinching 3-pointer against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.
LOS ANGELES — It’s hard to pick one play to summarize an evening that brought references to everything from Easter to “Star Wars,” that featured appearances by both Nellie and Nelly, a game in which the Warriors put up the most points scored against the Los Angeles Lakers in a half this season, then threatened to break the mark for the fewest points scored against them in a quarter.

But if one play typified what makes the Golden State Warriors a threat to any opponent — as well as themselves — it was Stephen Jackson’s 3-pointer that provided the final margin in the Warriors’ wild 115-111 victory over the Lakers on Sunday.

The Warriors scored 72 points in the first half and led by 26 early in the third quarter, but the Lakers came all the way back and briefly took the lead with 5:07 left in the game. Surprisingly, for such a helter-skelter team with no low-post presence, the Warriors were in their element. They’re now 10-2 in games decided by three points or fewer.

Up by a point in the final 30 seconds, the 24-second clock still in play, what did the Warriors do? Jackson launched a 26-foot, 3-pointer that hit nothing but net.

Seriously. That’s what they did when the conventional wisdom called for them to protect the lead, run down the clock and get a good shot.

Poor Derek Fisher. He thought about the normal way, so he played off Jackson, hedging toward Monta Ellis and Kelenna Azubuike on the wing. He was in no position to close out on Jackson when Baron Davis passed him the ball and Jackson cast away.

“Your natural instinct is not to just run past a guy that far from the basket at that time,” Fisher said. “You don’t want to give up an easy drive to the basket.”

Even Jackson admitted the usual play would not be to take such a low-percentage shot for coach Don Nelson’s team.

Murray tries again for new chemistry

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Source: Globe and Mail (Original Article)

OTTAWA — Chemistry is a touchy topic around here, going back to the Ottawa Senators’ appearance in the Stanley Cup final last spring. The Anaheim Ducks had a relatively easy time with the Senators, winning the NHL championship in five games, because they shut down the big line of Jason Spezza and wingers Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson. When the Senators’ other lines failed to take up the scoring slack, they were doomed.
Now, as the playoffs approach again, the problem remains. Specifically, it remains with the Senators’ second line, where chemistry between centre Mike Fisher, right winger Cory Stillman and whoever has been tried on the left side remains elusive.
General manager and head coach Bryan Murray will take another stab at solving this by putting Chris Neil at left wing on that line when he returns tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs from a four-week absence because of a knee injury. The hope is that hard-nosed Neil will create scoring opportunities with his fore-checking and his physical play in front of the net.

Fun and gaming at Westside Montessori fund-raiser

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Source: Toledo Blade (Original Article)

Gaming appears to be the popular venue for fund-raising. There’s no sit-down dinner and speeches, but an evening of activity where everyone wins, especially the charity for which the event was held.

MONEY. Lots of money. Not a pot of gold, but green paper money that whirled and swirled as guests tried to grab as much as they could in 10 seconds in the Mad Grab Money Booth to win dinner gift certificates and raffle tickets. That was just one of the fun games at the Westside Montessori Center Game Show Gala Saturday night.

The wheel of fortune roulette game for raffle tickets, food coupons, and centerpieces were fun, too, as was the Play 21 for raffle tickets.
But the game that drew a crowd of spectators was “Are You Smarter Than a Middle Schooler?” complete with lifeline supporters.
For each of two rounds, three adults were teamed against five students in the categories of math, science, language arts, social studies, and current events/pop culture, and the students prevailed. The prize was the board game “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?”

Other prizes were: A Grand Hotel vacation on Mackinac Island won by Sarah Lindberg; a luxury dream escape won by Terri Fisher, and an overnight stay at the Kalahari Waterpark resort with Cedar Point Amusement Park passes won by Paul and Mindy Vesoulis.

Guests were invited to bring a bottle of wine to add to the wine table, then raffle tickets were sold for the whole lot. Jim Rousos went home with more than 40 bottles of wine.

Tanya Pipatjarasgit and her husband, Brian Nupp, were among the guests at the Game Show Gala.
