Long-delayed dream of ministering realized

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Source: Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (Original Article)

God is here. I am sensing the presence of God all around me, and I see the powerful results of God’s grace.

What I have discovered is that right now at this juncture of my journey, my dreams have come true. What I have dreamed of is here – finally here. Wow! For me that is huge.

I remember my first inkling that I was destined for pastoral leadership, when one day while giving my testimony of God’s saving grace in my life, the power of the spirit of God moved through me in a way I had not experienced before.

People responded in demonstrative ways. That day, a good number of folks gave their lives to Christ. Afterward, a wise man spoke to me and said, “You’re gonna preach, sing and teach, girl. God has a plan to use you to build the kingdom!” I responded, “Really?”

Unlike some women, I had several examples of female pastors as mentors, so today I realize that my struggle with seeing myself in that role had more to do with me being attached to my past than realizing and embracing my future.

It was more comfortable to see myself as an inspirational speaker than it was to assume the responsibility of a call to pastoral ministries. After reading the account of Gideon’s life in the book of Judges, I became keenly aware that I needed to begin to see myself as God sees me.

Unlike Gideon, I was not in a drab spiritual condition, yet I was like him in that I was hearing from God and like many others asking myself the age old question, “Am I hearing God, or is it me?” My question developed into, “If it’s you, God, give me a sign.”

God was showing me amazing possibilities because of the miraculous grace and healing provided me in Christ. I just couldn’t imagine why God would want to use someone who had made a plethora of mistakes, mishaps, and the like. Surely he would want someone better than me.

What I BLUES CLUES dvd learned is that when God saves, …continue reading

Rotating skyscraper planned for Dubai

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Source: RTE.ie (Original Article)

An Italian architect has unveiled plans for a new skyscraper in Dubai that would be ‘the world’s first building in motion’ - an 80-storey tower with revolving floors that give it an ever-shifting shape.

The spinning floors, hung like rings around an immobile cement core, would offer residents a constantly changing view of the Gulf and the city’s skyline.

‘It’s the first building that is dynamic, changing the shape,’ Florence-based designer David Fisher told AP Television in New York, where he presented his plans.

‘You can adjust the shape the way you like every given moment. It’s designed by life, shaped by time,’ he added.

A few apartments, occupying entire floors, would spin on command using a voice-activated computer.

The motion of the rest of the building would be choreographed by the design team, in patterns that could be altered over time.

Twisting floors were just one of several futuristic features planned by Mr Fisher.

Giant wind turbines installed between every floor would generate enough electricity to power the entire building and even feed extra power back into the grid, he said.

‘I was thinking how to use the wind. Wind has a very negative effect on skyscrapers, we all know, and I say why do we want to fight the wind?’ Fisher explained, adding: ‘Lets use the wind, you know, for our benefit.’

Lifts would allow penthouse residents to park their cars right in their apartments, rather than leave them in a ground-level garage.

Even the method of construction would be unorthodox.

Mr Fisher said that each floor was to be prefabricated in an Italian factory, then shipped to the site and attached to the core.

Assembling a building in this fashion will require only 80 technicians and take 20 months, saving tens of millions of dollars, resulting in a total cost of $700m.

The architect declined to say exactly where in Dubai the tower would be built ANZ Credit Card or when site work might begin.

Iowa: IndyCar qualifying rained out, field set by points

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Source: Motorsport.com (Original Article)

Rain cancelled qualifying for the Sunday (June 22nd) IndyCar Iowa Corn 225,
mandating the grid be set by championship points for tomorrow’s 12:30 PM CDT
start.

As a result Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Team Penske’s Helio
Castroneves will lead the twenty-three car field to the green flag at Iowa
Speedway for the second consecutive year.

Row two will be set with Dan Wheldon and Andretti Green Racing’s Tony
Kanaan. Ryan Briscoe starts on the inside of row three alongside Danica
Patrick.

Two IndyCar Series regulars will not make the race after crashing out of
practice today. Marty Roth and Bruno Junqueira elected to cut their losses
after both suffered significant damage to their Dallara/Honda machines and
withdrew from the race.

Junqueira’s incident also involved Wheldon’s primary No. 10 car, forcing
the latter into his backup for tomorrow’s race.

Milka Duno will also take the green flag in her backup car.

Of the day’s surprises was a lightning-quick Hideki Mutoh who posted the
day’s best lap on the 7/8-mile oval in 17.4023 seconds, or 184.941 mph.
Mutoh will start seventh in the race.

New bond issue shows int'l confidence

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Source: Jamaica Observer (Original Article)

The Jamaican Government raised US$350 million late yesterday afternoon with the issue of a global Eurobond maturing in 2019 at a rate of eight per cent each year - the same interest rate the Government borrowed in our last international Eurobond issue in October, or the lowest borrowing rate on record.

More importantly, the successful bond issue means that despite the recent collapse of one of Jamaica’s principal external financial intermediaries, Bear Stearns, as the result of the ongoing international financial crisis, Jamaica still has access to the international capital market.

The money was raised for Jamaica jointly by US investment bank Morgan Stanley and German headquartered Deutsche Bank, with the bond being offered at a price of $97.498, giving it a yield to maturity of 8.375 per cent.

The lower the price of the bond, the higher the yield, and vice versa.

The principal will be paid off in three equally portioned instalments in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Oppenheimer’s Greg Fisher, who has probably traded more Jamaican bonds than anybody else, thinks that the price of the bonds fell immediately after the issue because “this deal broke so late in the day” against the backdrop of a weak
US market.

Fisher told the Business Observer that such a large issue is likely to put some downward pressure on some of the other issues in the market “A $350-m issue in this market is really going to test the liquidity of the entire Jaman (Jamaica Eurobond) curve. But as always, yield entices the investor. so hopefully the new deal will turn out to be a real coup for the government.”

Fisher’s colleague, Oppenheimer’s new Managing Director for Investments Dr Carl Ross commented exclusively for the Business Observer on why he thought the issue was successful despite the extremely difficult international environment.

“I believe the rating agencies’ stable outlooks as well as the That 70s Show dvd surprising robustness of Jamaica’s net international …continue reading

Great deals can be found at garage sales

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Source: Seattle Times (Original Article)

From an antique pearl collar for $1 to expensive suits, my husband and I have found great bargains at yard sales. At one yard sale, we picked up a large stack of new Ralph Lauren cloth dinner napkins in various colors and patterns for 50 cents each. The seller had purchased the napkins for a dinner party but changed her mind about the color scheme.

Beyond the great deals, garage sales and estate auctions also offer an insider’s glimpse of many neighborhoods. We’ve made friends and learned the local landscape by visiting yard sales.

For the best results, use the newspaper’s classified ads to help plan your route, look for moving sales and go at the end when tired sellers are ready to drastically cut prices.

Here are my top garage-sale finds:

Little Space Aliens: A bucket of little rubber action figures for about $2.

Zegna suit: A beautiful Italian wool suit (typically sells for $1,200) for my husband for $15.

Little Tikes car: List price: about $60. Gently used model at garage sale: $5. The Little Tikes Car — a hard plastic vehicle in primary colors — is the hottest-selling toy car. Garage sales are great places to pick up toys — especially durable plastic items from Fisher-Price and Little Tikes.

First edition “Lord of the Rings” trilogy: Long before the Hobbits hit the big screen, we stumbled across a first edition, boxed set of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien for $10 at a yard sale.

Condensed and excerpted from “The Frugal Duchess of South Beach” by Sharon Harvey Rosenberg (DPL Press, pp. 240, $14.95).

Deadine Thursday for store refund

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Source: Akron Beacon Journal (Original Article)

Thanks to many of you who have called or asked where my column has been for the past few weeks. I’ve been busy working on a really exciting project that starts Sunday, June 22, in the Beacon Journal and my regular column will return with that.

But there are a few timely things that I wanted to update you on, so here goes:

High Point refunds

Customers who were left with nothing for their payments to the former High Point Furniture on Tallmadge Avenue have until Thursday, June 19, to file a complaint to receive a refund.

The Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs worked out a settlement with the former owners of the furniture store, which abruptly closed in October. The agreement allowed for customers who lost money or were left without furniture by the closing to file a complaint within a 90-day period to receive a refund. That 90-day period ends June 19.

Documentation is preferred, but the agency will attempt to help in any case.

Director Cynthia Sich said her office has received 67 complaints against High Point and has gotten refunds or credits for 47 people for a total value of $25,746. Another 16 are eligible for approximately $5,300 in refunds, and the agency is still working with the remainders.

Requests for refunds must be received or postmarked by 4 p.m. June 19 to be included in the settlement. Sich said she projects that people who turn in complaints will receive their refund checks by early August.

To file a complaint, you can send a letter, go in person to the office or fax or e-mail. They’d like copies of documentation, such as invoices of items not received.

The address is: Office of Consumer Affairs, 1040 E. Tallmadge Ave., Room 128, Akron 44310. The fax is 330-630-4655. The e-mail is: consumeraffairs@summitoh.net

LOS ANGELES - Several events ignited the Celtics’ stunning second-half rally in a 97-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. An 11-0 run over a 2-minute-1-second span late in the first half gave the Celtics momentum. And a 23-5 run late in the third quarter and early in the final quarter tied the score. But the origins of the comeback might go back even further, to a May 25, 2002, playoff game, when the Celtics overcame a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the New Jersey Nets, 94-90.”For me, it was deja vu all over again, watching the game [Thursday] night,” said former Celtics guard Kenny Anderson, who is in Los Angeles for a promotional event. “Paul Pierce was the only guy who played in both games, and I knew he was sitting in the huddle saying all the things we said.”He had been in that situation before and he pretty much knew what could be done.”The Celtics entered Game 3 of the ‘02 Eastern Conference finals tied with the Nets. And the Nets led by 26 points in the second half, but were outscored, 41-16, in the final quarter. The Garden crowd had been booing in the third quarter, but ended up cheering on the Celtics in a chaotic final quarter. At the time, the Celtics said they were motivated by an inspirational speech from Antoine Walker.”[Walker said] no matter what happens in this fourth quarter, win or lose, we’re just going to go down fighting,” Pierce said after that game. “We’re not going to get embarrassed tonight.”Pierce had been in a shooting slump, connecting on 5 of 34 shots in the series, then scored 19 points in the final quarter.”Antoine was so positive in timeouts,” former Celtics coach Jim O’Brien said. “He was saying to Paul, ‘You just take over this damn game. You just start carrying us. Aussie Credit Cards Attack, attack, attack.’ “A Rodney Rogers …continue reading

A pending deal for express-delivery giant DHL to switch its U.S. air carrier to UPS in Louisville would be a devastating economic blow to much of southwestern Ohio - particularly Wilmington and Clinton County, where ABX Air and ASTAR serve what is now DHL’s largest hub.
