NEW YORK, June 15 (Reuters) - Should oil prices extend
their pullback and data show no further deterioration in the
U.S. economy, stocks could rise this week. But investment
banks’ results will be the wild card.

The U.S. Federal Reserve’s increased discomfort with
inflation will also curb investors’ enthusiasm, with the May
Producer Price Index set to give the latest measure.

Major Wall Street investment banks Goldman Sachs (GS.N: Quote, Profile, Research),
Lehman Brothers (LEH.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) are expected
to post poor results this week, hampered by more write-downs
and a sizable loss at Lehman.

The May PPI report, due for release on Tuesday, tops the
data list, followed by May housing starts, industrial
production and a reading on the first-quarter’s current
account. All of those numbers are on Tuesday’s agenda.

Also crucial in setting the market’s tone will be
Thursday’s weekly jobless claims and a survey of economic
conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region by the Federal Reserve

synchronized by daily volatility in the crude oil futures
market. We see that pattern continuing,” said Fred Dickson,

    He’s talking about Pine Ridge Care Center, a Salt Lake City nursing home that racked up the worst inspection record in Utah since 2000. Inspectors say the staff ignored bedsores and failed to investigate abuse complaints, including a 2005 case where a resident was forcibly dragged down the hall.

    Chyreisse Bullock, Alvin’s daughter, says the nurses and their aides rarely bathed her father and would leave him in soiled diapers.

“The staff really didn’t care,” she said.

    Then two years ago, Walter Matjesich bought the place. Pine Ridge became Majestic Care. The staff was fired, the furniture replaced and Alvin is clean and much happier. Inspectors haven’t found any major violations since the switch.

When it comes to watching over their tech-obsessed teenagers, parents are learning the dangers of too much information.

One mom does her best surveillance work in the laundry room.Her teenage son has the habit of leaving his cellphone in the pocket of his jeans, so in between sorting colors and whites, she’ll grab his phone and furtively scroll through his text messages from the past week to see what he’s said, whom he’s connected with, and where he’s been. Sometimes, she’ll use her own phone to call another mom she’s friendly with and share her findings in hushed tones.Effective detective work? Absolutely. Effective parenting? That’s less clear.If her sleuthing prevents her son from engaging in unacceptably risky behavior, then it will likely have been worthwhile. But her own actions are not without serious risk. How can she act on her insider information without revealing the way she gleaned it? How violated would her son feel if he walked in on her in the laundry room, mid-scroll? And, more subtly but just as important, how can she not think less of her son after seeing in intimate detail this blow-by-blow accounting of the messy teenage experience that previous generations of parents viewed only from a safe, soft-focus distance?Then again, the other extreme on the parenting spectrum - providing zero oversight and cheerily hoping for the best - is probably just as risky.In manifold ways, technology makes life easier for parents - from improving the efficiency of after-school pickups to offering the ability to check in with our kids at virtually any moment. No, it wasn't a full circle for Wachovia Monday, when the fourth-largest bank in the country announced it was forcing CEO Ken Thompson into retirement and handing the reins on an interim basis to board Chairman Lanty Smith. But there is at least some sense of homecoming in the move for the Triad.

The 2001 merger with First Union that saw Wachovia decamp its corporate headquarters from Winston-Salem to Charlotte is fading from memory. But those halcyon days of youth — before our once-local bank got mixed up with a rough gang of subprime mortgage brokers in the form of 2006 merger partner Golden West — look sweet in the light of Wachovia's $707 million first quarter loss.

Now, it's up to a man with deep and wide roots in the Triad to guide the bank back toward profitability.

ILIGAN CITY — The United Nation’s (UN) World Food Programme said Wednesday that more parents in Mindanao are cutting back on the food they ate so their children would have more to eat to survive the current rice crisis.

In a briefing here about the current crisis, Valerie Guarnieri, WFP Country Director for the Philippines, said they are worried that poor families especially those in the conflict affected areas in Mindanao are eating only one meal a day into poverty because they are too poor to buy more than a kilo of rice a day.

Guarnieri said they received reports that poor families are resorting to eating rootcrops or fruits to feed their families.

“We have heard mothers saying they have to cut on their own food intake just to spare food for their children,” she said

In Kidapawan City, a vendor, Rodrigo Villar Bangca, committed suicide after learning that the price of commercial rice have gone up to P54 a kilo.

His widow told the police that she heard his husband grumbling that life is getting harder for poor people like them.

“He has lost hope but I never expected he would kill himself,” she said.

The World Food Programme said a recent study revealed that 30 percent of Mindanao households are skipping meals or eat less nutritional food when the rice crisis broke out last January.

APEX: Preliminary Survey Results on Health & Well-Being of Executives

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire - June 3, 2008) - The Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada (APEX), today released the preliminary findings of a comprehensive survey on the health and well being of public service executives undertaken in 2007.

The data is being compared with surveys taken in 1997 and 2002, and the early results show some encouraging news: there has been no decline over 5 years in the number of executives who report being in good health (about 70%). As well, executives are working about the same number of hours as 5 years ago, with a slight drop in weekend work and nights spent away from home. The survey results also show that many executives took steps individually to improve their health - like quitting smoking, exercising, and eating right.

However, the survey results also show an increase, compared to five years ago, in the number of executives suffering from ailments related to mental health and addictions. This data will be examined more closely and compared with executives in other sector organizations. In addition, executives contemplating leaving their current workplaces say their most significant reasons include: not being recognized, not being valued or respected, having a values-clash with the organization, and a non-supportive work environment.

APEX President Simon Coakeley expressed his thanks to the executives who participated in this survey, and in past surveys in 1997 and 2002 because APEX now has access to longitudinal data on health and well-being that spans a decade. RAPID CITY, S.D. — Barack Obama has scheduled a rally Tuesday night in St. Paul, Minn., at the arena where Republicans will hold their national convention, signaling he expects to have secured the Democratic presidential nomination after the final two primaries, in Montana and South Dakota, that day.

“It’s the place where John McCain will accept the nomination. It’s a good place for us to kick off the next phase of the campaign,” Robert Gibbs, Obama’s communications director, said in an interview.

Obama is 42 delegates shy of winning the nomination. He is poised to draw even closer by the end of the weekend. A party committee is working Saturday to determine how to allocate delegates from Florida and Michigan. On Sunday, Puerto Rico holds its primary.

Obama’s campaign announced Saturday that the Minnesota rally with Obama and his wife, Michelle, is set for the Xcel Energy Center, site of the GOP convention beginning Sept. 1.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was campaigning in Puerto Rico on Saturday, trails Obama by about 200 delegates.

“Minnesota is an important battleground state,” said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. “The McCain campaign has made accommodation daylesford it clear they will compete there aggressively. We will too.”
