NBA playoffs no longer on Chinese TV

May 27th, 2008 by nadiajones

NBA playoff games have mysteriously disappeared from Chinese television.

Entertainment programs on Chinese TV, including NBA contests, were suspended last week during a three-day period of mourning for victims of the deadly Sichuan earthquake,

When the mourning period ended, the NBA playoffs returned as the state-run national broadcaster, CCTV, showed the Western Conference final between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.

However, subsequent games have not been shown.

“We have followed orders and stopped the NBA broadcast,” Jiang Heping, director for CCTV’s sport channel, said in Wednesday editions of the Shanghai-based Oriental Sports Daily.

“Since the May 12 earthquake, we’re careful about the way we broadcast the NBA and the content must match the whole atmosphere.”

However, concerns about sports programming following the earthquake did not prevent CCTV’s sports channel from showing women’s soccer and highlights of track, women’s basketball and French Open tennis.

The NBA’s office in China offered only a brief statement from NBA China’s chief executive officer, Tim Chen.

“We are working closely with CCTV to ensure that NBA games and content are appropriate for China and to begin broadcasting as soon as possible,” Chen said.

NBA basketball is popular in China, although interest has dropped off without the top two Chinese players — Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian — involved in the playoffs. The injured Yao plays for SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS dvd the Houston Rockets and Yi plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

In an ideal world, teams want everything from an outfield prospect: power, speed, a strong arm — the proverbial five tools. The hope is that in any given Draft, a team might find one of those toolsy guys who can play center and maybe a slugger to man a corner.

Looking at this year’s Draft class, that might be a bit of a challenge, because there is a relatively weak group to choose from. This is nothing new for scouting directors: the 2007 Draft wasn’t exactly outfield-heavy, with only three outfielders — four if you count the converted Matt LaPorta — taken in the first 30 picks.

Those three were all from the high school ranks and it appears again that there is a little more to choose from on that front. A number of toolsy, but raw, outfielders from Southern California in particular, could whet the appetites of some teams in the best card credit rate first round.

Showdown at Meralco

May 22nd, 2008 by nadiajones

GSIS chief girds for proxy war on Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines–Government Service Insurance System president Winston Garcia looks like a man getting ready for war as he prepares for a proxy fight at the Manila Electric Co.’s annual stockholders’ meeting on Tuesday where he could either lose his seat on the board, or end up in control of the country’s biggest power distribution utility.

Garcia said the soliciting of proxies could result in a reduction of the government seats at the 11-member Meralco board from four to three, with him as the probable casualty.

Garcia said it was apparent that the utility’s rates could go down only with a change in the Meralco’s management team.

He said this would be his objective at the shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday when a new board would be elected.

But Garcia has accused the Lopez group of “engaging in dirty tricks” by soliciting proxies even after the deadline for this had lapsed last week.

Meralco vice president Elpi Cuna said this was “not only irresponsible but downright false.”

“It was and will never be the policy of Meralco management to engage in dirty tricks,” said Cuna, Meralco’s director for corporate communication.

The government “needs the four seats to establish a quorum as well as a majority [with the help of two independent directors],” said Garcia who has been waging a media war against the Lopez group’s management of Meralco.

‘Abusive practices’
Garcia said that his aim was to change Meralco’s management team whose “abusive practices” were the reason why electricity rates were the highest in Luzon and even in Asia.

Garcia said his GSIS team was watching the developments leading to and during the annual meeting.

He said he would be bringing eight lawyers to face off with Meralco’s “40 lawyers.”

“If we see that we have been wronged, we are ready to take them to court. A lot of people Frequent Flyer Credit Cards could go to jail,” he said.

Aspen trees starved in global warming experiment

May 21st, 2008 by nadiajones

Source: Hemscott (Original Article)

PELLSTON, Mich. (AP) - Chain saws scream in a northern Michigan forest, but
it's not the familiar sound of lumberjacks.

This time the tree killers are environmental researchers. They hope that years
from now the aspens they remove will be replaced with a healthy mix of maples,
oaks, beeches and pines — which should soak up more carbon dioxide from an ever

warmer world.

The scientists hope to take a 100-acre section of the University of Michigan
Biological Station research forest closer to the state it was in before logging,

when it was dominated by different species of trees instead of the present-day
aspens.

They say the experiment is the first they're aware of that involves removing
large numbers of trees to promote growth of other species that will boost carbon

absorption. It comes as governments and businesses around the world look for
economically feasible ways to limit climate change.

Carbon dioxide makes up more than 80 percent of the human-produced U.S.
greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming, the Department of
Energy says.

Scientists believe a diverse woodland will hold more carbon because it will be
richer in nitrogen and use sunlight more efficiently. Both are key factors in
photosynthesis, during which carbon is absorbed, said Christoph Vogel, a
University of Michigan forest ecologist.

'We've been managing forests for lumber or pulp, or perhaps as habitat for deer
or quail,' said project leader Peter Curtis, an Ohio State University forest
ecologist. 'Many economists think that managing them for carbon will be a fact
of life in the not-too-distant future.'

Skeptics question forests' long-term reliability for sequestering carbon. They
can be cut down, burned or destroyed by disease or insects. Also, it's hard to
measure their storage capacity, said Jonathan Pershing, Frequent Flyer Credit Cards climate and energy
program director for …continue reading

‘Times’ Makes Mistake of Still Caring About Park Slope

• “There is all this class resentment in New York, and it’s very tied up in real estate. People who are well-housed are the envy of others.” —John Mollenkopf, director of the Center for Urban Research at the City University Graduate Center.

So you lash out against that as if it’s the worst thing in the world, when in five years, you know what? It’s going to be you.” —Jeff Sandgrund, 30, a lifelong Park Sloper
