Big malls have their place in the world, but if they’re
your only shopping destination, you’re missing out on
some of the best retail therapy Portland has to offer. And
now that the weather is more accommodating, it’s the
perfect time to head outdoors and do some exploring with
this, one in our occasional series on neighborhood shopping,
as your guide.

Today’s locale is Sellwood, a charming area full of
older homes, restaurants, wine bars, antique shops,
galleries and boutiques. Most businesses are concentrated on
Southeast 13th Avenue, north and south of Tacoma Street, and
since this is FOODday, we visited several to score some
great buys on kitchenware, decor and comestibles.

A good place to start is locally owned New Seasons Market,
1214 S.E. Tacoma St., where you’ll find local organic
foods as well as eco-friendly home furnishings. 8 a.m.-10
p.m. daily

At Please Be Seated, 8309 S.E. 13th Ave., check out
Millefleurs Gien France dinnerware ($35 per plate),
beautiful French Le Jacquard linens, Vietri tabletop,
Juliska handblown wineglasses and much more. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tuesday-Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday

Walk into Scrub, 8235 S.E. 13th Ave., and you may be
overwhelmed by the urge to go home and start cleaning. The
array of products includes brushes, cleaners, soaps . . .
even vacuum cleaners. Look for a 1-gallon Red Enamel Sponge
Pail ($28), brightly colored Japanese Chrysanthemum Pot
Scrubber ($3.98), Porcelain Soap Dish with Wooden Tray
($10.98), Botanical Earth Kitchen Citrus Spice Hand Soap
(4.5-ounce bar, $4.98), German Wood Vegetable Fiber Bristle
