Exotic materials shade outdoor spaces

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Source: MiamiHerald.com (Original Article)

With plenty of outdoorsy people, the Sunshine State is a perfect place to sell decorative shade structures with an exotic tropical flair.

That business niche attracted husband-and-wife entrepreneurs Laraine and Garth Wight, who relocated from South Africa to South Florida in the 1980s. As it was in their homeland, thatched roofing is a prime facet of their Fort Lauderdale store.

Fluffy elephant grass that rustles in the breeze and thatch reed that offers a sleek, tailored pattern are among the products used for topping gazebos, poolside umbrellas and tiki bars. In addition to thatching supplies from Vietnam and South Africa, the business offers an assortment of other natural building materials from all over the world.

Safari Tropical Design Center in Fort Lauderdale is a showcase for the exotic building materials along with decorative and useful items for relaxing and entertaining indoors or out.

Woven twigs manipulated into different shapes double as light fixtures. The round pendant styles cost $89 to $149.

Building materials include bamboo plywood, at $2 to $4 a square foot. Heather Selvaggio, director of sales and marketing, says it can be used on ceilings, walls or cabinets, adding a tropical punch to surfaces such as a porch ceiling. One client used bamboo plywood as cabinet fronts on an entertainment center, she said.

Other natural products include braided and twisted ropes made from such materials as seagrass, banana bark or corn husks. They work nicely as decorative lashing for tiki huts and other tropical structures.

Rolled bamboo screens offer a pliable material to wrap around columns or hang along outdoor fences.

Bamboo and eucalyptus poles, ranging from eight to 19 feet, have a variety of uses — from crown molding to support columns for tiki huts.

Along with building materials, the business offers an array of outdoor furniture, tableware and other home Frequent Flyer Credit Cards goods. Bars and other structures may …continue reading

Good day, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Q1 2008 Commercial Vehicle Group Earnings Call. My name is Tony, and I will be your coordinator for today. At this time, all participants are in a listen-only mode and we will conduct a question-and-answer session towards the end of this conference. (Operator Instructions).

I’d now like to turn the call over to your host for today’s conference, Mr. Chad Utrup. Please proceed, sir.

Chad Utrup

Thanks, Tony, and thanks, everybody for joining us on the conference call today. As usual before we begin the formal portion of the call, I’ll first read through our Safe Harbor language. And Merv actually has a bit of a voice problem today, so I will then turn the call over to Kevin Frailey, our Executive Vice President of Business Development, for a brief company update.

And then I will take you through our results for the first quarter and our revised outlook for the balance of 2008, the full year 2008. And then we will take time to answer your questions.

I would now like to remind you that the conference call contains forward-looking statements. Actual results may differ from anticipated results because of certain risks and uncertainties.

These may include but are not limited to the economic conditions in the markets in which CVG operates, fluctuations in the production volumes of vehicles for which CVG is a supplier, risks associated with conducting business in foreign countries and currencies, and other risks detailed in our SEC filings.

And with that, I will turn the call over to Kevin.

Thanks, ANZ Card Chad. I’m not a particularly gifted …continue reading

Granite City is growing away from its steel image

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Source: Belleville News Democrat (Original Article)

GRANITE CITY — Mayor Ed Hagnauer wants to shake “the stigma.”

“Dirty little steel town,” said the life-long resident. “That’s the kind of stigma we’ve always lived with, and nobody has really aggressively gone out and tried to change that. I think that’s kind of what we’re doing.”

Since his election to office three years ago, the former Granite City fire chief and firefighter has made strides that are beginning to take shape in his hometown that has long been noted for its steel production.

First, a new streetscape program was undertaken on Niedringhaus Avenue along the city’s oldest and most historic buildings, including City Hall. Sixteen cameras were placed around the downtown areas allowing police to monitor areas deemed unsafe.

City property inspections have been bolstered and alleyways are regularly cleaned.

The city has purchased six vacant buildings downtown, including the former YMCA located across the street from City Hall. This is where Hagnauer and the City Council envision a new arts and theater center and museum in the 84-year-old building.

Jon Ferry, who at 23 become the city’s economic development director in 2006 after the job was open five years, said the art and entertainment development will be done by public investment through tax increment financing bonds that should become available by the end of next month. That will provide approximately $15 million, of which $4 million has been designated for a new four-screen movie theater downtown.

“The movie theater takes care of the entertainment, but the core of the arts district is this YMCA renovation, which we want to turn into a cultural arts center,” Ferry said. “The main portion of this redevelopment includes an approximately 300-seat auditorium for live performances, concerts and plays and things of that nature,” Ferry said.

“Initially, our ideas are to include an orchestra pit. It’s something that is not in facebook directory a lot of venues in this …continue reading

Windows of opportunity

Source: Denver Post (Original Article)

Raise your hand if you moved into your home months or even years ago, yet you still have those paper Redi Shades on your windows.
Dealing with window treatments — or not — is a major design quandary for residents and designers alike. There are so many options in window-treatment fabrics, colors and function that picking them can be overwhelming. So do-it-yourselfers often install temporary paper shades for immediate privacy and then don’t give their windows a second thought.
Or they do nothing at all because they are totally lost.
“People see window treatments as an afterthought,” says Jackie Von Tobel, an interior designer and author of “The Design Directory of Window Treatments” ($60, Gibbs Smith), a reference book she intended to serve as a window-coverings guide for homeowners and interior designers. “But every single window in your house has a different set of needs, depending on its size, location and function.”
Selecting window treatments is a precise process that “deals with measuring and knowing how to hang rods and materials,” says Toni Palmer, who has been designing luxury homes in Cherry Creek for 37 years.
Window treatments also complete a room’s look by adding color and movement to a space that might otherwise feel static. They can soften hard edges, enhance architecture or detract from sore spots.
“A lot of people have beautiful homes, but when they don’t furnish them completely and never get around to window treatments, they really cheat themselves,” says Nora Stewart, a 20-year residential interior designer in Denver who specializes in custom window treatments.
Stewart and designer Toni Palmer used examples from Von Tobel’s book to help do-it-yourselfers dress up some of the most problematic windows. Their advice should help everyday homeowners take down those Redi Shades once and for all.
