`Take the time to take time' in Gascon

AGEN, France–There is the romance of moving to a rustic pigeonnier in the south of France – and the reality of shovelling out its 87-centimetre-deep carpet of fossilized pigeon poop. There is the dream of cooking up rustic fare in a farmhouse dating from 1724 – and the alarming fact that a tree is growing up through its rotting kitchen floor.

Two decades ago, Kate Hill fell under the spell of Gascony, a region that feels untrampled, unspoiled and authentically French.

"I didn’t come with a commitment to stay. It just snuck up on me. I’m still not bored, that’s all," she says with a shrug and a smile.

Tall and bold, her salt-and-pepper hair cut no-nonsense short, her voice grows soft as she explains, "My eyes are never sated with the beauty of the countryside of Gascony. I’m still seduced by this place. And as long as the seduction continues, I stay."

Visitors here ramble over sunflower and poplar-lined roads with nary a car in sight, lanes so spectacular they would be clogged with traffic in Provence. They privately inspect mosaics and baths among the ruins of an excavated 4th century Roman palace in Seviac, an archeological find that tour groups would swarm in Rome.

They explore the residence of the first Bourbon king and France’s favourite: not the ostentatious Versailles of prissy Louis XIV, but the Nerac chateau of Henri IV, a swashbuckling outdoorsman and serial womanizer who used to joke, in his thick Gascon accent, that he surely would have been hanged as a thief had he not been born a king.

And they can scuttle down the drained moat that encircles Larresingle, the tiniest bastide in France – a petite "a pied" version of the massive medieval Disneyland a couple of hours drive east in Carcassonne.

Gascony is a place where geese and cows outnumber humans, and where the most exciting village event each weekend is perpetual petanque played Best Credit Card Rate by young men toting cigars and …continue reading

PINE GROVE MILLS — One whiff, and Dean Luse falls in love all over again.

The scent of fresh pine, maybe walnut or cherry, hits him, an alluring perfume that promises another chapter in an enduring relationship.

“When I get around a sawmill, fresh-sawed lumber, oh, that’s the best smell,” he said.

A retired contractor now 81, Luse has been enthralled with wood for decades. In a cluttered two-bay garage, he transforms simple planks into one-of-a-kind furniture crafted with the care of masters of yore.

“I very seldom make a piece that’s a duplicate,” he said. “I always make it a little bit different.”

He just doesn’t make a lot of profit from his hobby.

Some pieces he sells, but many become gifts to his family or to the State College Christian Women’s Club annual benefit auction. Others fill his Pine Grove Mills home, among them a glass-topped, walnut coffee table, an oak TV cabinet and a cherry gate-leg table.

In a cookie-cutter, prefabricated age, Luse rarely uses patterns. His inspiration comes from catalogs, history books and antique stores. A classic design catches his eye, and with a few measurements, he creates his own version.

“I just get a lot of joy out of it,” he said. “You look at something and say, ‘Well, I could improve on that.’ ”

Local residents appreciate Luse’s skill. Paulette Wernecke, of State College, calls herself a “fan of his work.” She owns five of his pieces — a small table, an entertainment center, a dry sink, a corner cabinet and a jelly cupboard. Two were made to order. Luse used a photo as a guide for the cherry dry sink, and he built the cupboard to fit Wernecke’s narrow hallway.

She likes his blending of old and new. “He can recapture the antiqueness of something,” budgetairfarestips Wernecke said.

Features define a classic kitchen

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Source: Chicago Daily Herald (Original Article)

A classic - it’s something that stands the test of time and looks just as stylish today as it did yesterday and will tomorrow. In kitchen trends, classic elegance is achieved through the use of cabinetry, color and creativity.

“A classically styled kitchen will look just as fresh years from today as it does right now,” said John Troxell, design director for Wood-Mode, a leading manufacturer of fine custom cabinetry. “This sense of timelessness is best achieved through the use of proportions.”

For example, the relationship of the cabinets to the room must be in sync and not over or under scaled. Other classic kitchen elements are clean lines and simple trim - not plain but not ornate, and scaled to the cabinets and room size.

And be sure the design fits with the architecture of the home, he cautioned. White cabinets, for instance, are always a classic because they provide a clean environment. However, the look and feel of the kitchen can be traditional or classic contemporary depending on the style of the rest of the home.

The materials used also help determine the appearance of the kitchen. In many of today’s kitchens, maple, mid tones and a mix of woods are quite sought after, with some darker woods gaining popularity as well. But the richness and grain pattern of cherry wood make it the most associated with the classic style.

“Cabinet door styles are another way homeowners can classify their kitchens as classics - whether they are going for a traditional or transitional look,” said Troxell. Raised-panel doors like Brookhaven’s Springfield collection offer a comfortable yet formal feeling in Wood-Mode’s American Traditional kitchen design. For a more casual look, recessed-panel doors add a country charm to the American Homestead kitchen.

Wood-Mode’s newest show kitchen, the Southampton, offers a slightly different take on the classic design. This sophisticated look tends to be more formal with compare credit card a heavier and more ornate molding. …continue reading

Lane's End is far from a regular farm

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Source: Cincinnati Enquirer (Original Article)

From the first glimpse of the house at Lane’s End Farm near Loveland, painted an unabashed shade of orchid, a visitor understands that its owner is a woman who is not afraid of color.

“The house was this color when we bought it” in 1996, says Sam Browne. “We kept it the same color and we added accents in green and eggplant.”

Through color, dramatic use of eclectic furnishings and a changing landscape of her dried flower arrangements, Browne ties the rambling house together - from the original 1860s rooms to the completely renovated kitchen.

Her favorite color combination of yellow and red is used widely, but not exclusively.

• Photos: Lane’s End Farm

“I try to always keep one color consistent from one room to the next,” she says.

The oldest part of the house consists of the master bedroom and bath on the main floor and bedrooms above. Browne retained the former owner’s faux wood finish on the walls and faux grain on the molding. To the ruddy palette of this room she added contrasting white trim and white plantation shutters.

By periodically changing the window wreath and other floral arrangements, Browne keeps the room attuned to the season.

The adjacent master bath blends old and new, funky and elegant. Walls are off-white bead board and red Victorian-look wallpaper; a crystal chandelier hangs above the corner Jacuzzi tub and a rectangle of stained glass dresses up the window.

The wood floor is painted a checkerboard pattern. Stairs lead from this little retreat upstairs to two bedrooms.

The next-oldest room is a country parlor with fireplace, wide-plank flooring and built-in bookshelves and cabinets. The walls are green with yellow trim and furnishings are formal: a leather armchair and antique side-table here, a flower-print sofa there, and distinctly Victorian plant and floral arrangements completing the room’s period look.
