Editor’s Note: Countdown to the Crown has moved to ESPN.com after a successful, two-year run online as one of the most comprehensive handicapper’s analyses of the 3-year-old scene. Posted each Friday from Jan. 1 through the Belmont Stakes, Countdown keeps you apprised of the rising stars in the sophomore class from the maiden ranks to the Grade 1 stakes.

3 Things You Won’t Read Anywhere Else
Opinions are like taxes. Some people try to avoid them at all costs.

1 – BIG BROWN better have the moves of James Brown if he’s going to win the Florida Derby from post No. 12. He’s got enough work to do already, as he drags the bandwagon of expectations for every card-carrying speed-figure devotee in America. He was a bet-against on hype alone … even before the pill-pull.

2 — ADRIANO is one of the most impressive 3-year-olds of 2008, no matter the surface, and his biggest undoing in a potential Derby foray would be coming unglued in the pre-race hoopla, not the surface under his feet. He can run with most of the Top 20 in any poll on any track in my estimation and deserves every chance with extra pre-race schooling.

3 – Kudos to Kent Desormeaux, John Velazquez and Cornelio Velasquez for remaining stateside to ride Kentucky Derby hopefuls BIG BROWN, FACE THE CAT and FIERCE WIND, bypassing the riches in Dubai. America’s top pilots all are multi-millionaires, and these guys realize what’s most important to their careers at this point in time.

This Week’s Fearless Forecast
This section includes a preview of the coming week’s 3-year-old races to watch. As the calendar nears April, the potency of the undercard races has lessened to a great degree, but the major stakes this Saturday on the beaches of Florida and Dubai certainly make up for it.

Before we break down the Florida and UAE derbies, here are a few other races of repute this weekend. Santa Anita puts sprinters in the mix in Saturday’s Romantic Getaways $75,000 San Miguel, where G2 winner …continue reading

NEW YORK — When Abercrombie & Kent launched super-luxurious private-jet tours two years ago, executives were pretty sure there was demand for the trips, even though they cost more than $50,000 a person.

What they miscalculated, perhaps, was just how strong the demand would be. Aimed at the Champagne-and-caviar set, the globe-circling adventures on a specially configured Boeing 757 were a huge hit, prompting the company this year to take the concept to a new level.

This week, Abercrombie & Kent unveiled a new 757, boasting that it is the most intimate and ritzy in the business. Configured to hold only 52 passengers, down from 88 on Abercrombie’s last jet, the jet will cost from $85,000 to $100,000 a person per trip.

“Many of our clients said they would gladly pay double to have a more intimate experience,” says Scott Wiseman, managing director of Illinois-based Abercrombie & Kent, chatting during a reception for travel agents on the plane earlier this week at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Each of the seats on the aircraft, which Abercrombie will lease seasonally from Icelandair, is a wide, extended-recline cradle seat, the kind found in first-class cabins on traditional carriers. The distance between seats, or pitch as it’s known in the industry, is a generous 60 inches. The jet also has a rear lounge that consists of four seating areas, each with oversized beige seats and a teak table, where passengers can sip a drink or have a full dinner while zipping from Marrakech to Timbuktu.

More than a dozen crew and staffers will accompany each tour, including four tour guides, a dedicated baggage handler and five flight attendants — which is a ratio of more than American Express Gold Card one staffer to every eight guests, …continue reading

Peru protests shrink output at Pluspetrol

Friday, March 21st, 2008

LIMA, March 21 (Reuters) - Argentina’s Pluspetrol has
partially stopped production at a block on an oil field in
northern Peru after protesters stormed the facility and took
control of the local airport, the company said on Friday.

Pluspetrol halted operations early on Thursday at Block 1AB
in the Loreto region in Peru’s Amazon jungle “in order to
safeguard the physical integrity of its workers, the local
population and to guarantee the security of the installations,”
the company said in a statement.

For every day of the suspension, Pluspetrol said it will
lose 23,000 of the some 47,000 barrels it extracts from Peru’s
jungle each day.

Poor Peruvian communities often pressure mining and energy
companies to build schools or hospitals in remote regions.

Earlier this month, Pluspetrol was forced to suspend
operations in Block 8 after indigenous protesters held some
company workers hostage. In January, it stopped some operations
at Block 1AB because of protests around social assistance.

Pluspetrol is one of Argentina’s biggest natural gas
producers and leads a consortium that pumps gas from Peru’s
massive Camisea field, one of the largest reserves in South ANZ Low Rate MasterCard

Peruvian Workers Blockade Road

Peruvian Workers Blockade Road
Lima, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) Dozens of trucks and other vehicles remained stranded on Tuesday in the Yurimaguas-Tarapoto road, in the Peruvian central forest, during a general strike, while seven people recovered from wounds sustained in clashes.
Local radio stations said the road blockade persists, despite a drastic police action on Monday in the locality of Pichanaki, the strongest point in the protest in the Amazonian region, which is not being observed in other forest areas, according to the government.
Monday’s repression left six civilians and one policeman wounded, according to leaders of the protest. However, other sources indicated that the number of wounded reached over 10.
Demonstrators also set a truck on fire and police sent reinforcements, with Minister of Interior Luis Alva saying yesterday night that situation was under control.
The strike is against a draft bill calling for granting Amazonian land to private investors. The region also presented other demands to the government, which enjoys very low support, according to surveys.
Meanwhile, Secretary General of CGTP (Workers Confederation of Peru), Mario Huaman, announced that they are coordinating the date of a national strike with other social organizations and regional fronts such as those protesting in the forest.
He added that it would be a civic, popular, peaceful strike against the government repressive policy, which in a recent farm strike caused the deaths of four people, against a recent rise in prices the government attributes to external factors and speculation, and against the privatizing economic policy bankwest lite of the Alan Garcia Administration.
