Propulsion System Will Include Reduced Engine Weight

GENEVA, EBACE.- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that its HTF7500E turbofan propulsion system family for Embraer’s new MSJ/MLJ family of business aircraft will include technology that will reduce NOx, deliver best in class fuel economy and still deliver the reliability that the HTF7000 family of engines has established as an industry benchmark.

The new engine will use Honeywell’s proprietary “SABER” technologies, a unique package of advanced combustor technologies that include the use of an innovative “rich-quench-lean” configuration to improve fuel burn and significantly reduce the production of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide, unburned fuel emissions and smoke.

The engine will also feature weight reductions achieved through design changes and material substitutions including use of composites and titanium alloys.

“The HTF7500E will offer on-condition maintenance by design, and maintenance intervals will be synchronized with the airframe inspections,” said Rob Wilson, President, Business and General Aviation. “Honeywell designed the engine with an acoustic signature well under stage four noise requirements and will be backed by our industry-leading maintenance service plan.”

Bob Mayle is head of Spirit AeroSystems’ project that is supplying a propulsion package for Gulfstream Aerospace’s new $58.5 million G650 business jet.

It’s Spirit’s first venture into the business jet market.

Spirit is building the nacelle, or engine covering, thrust reverser and engine build-up for Rolls Royce’s new BR725 engine that will go on the jet.

As program director, Mayle is in charge of the engineering and operations that fabricate the parts and perform final assembly. He also oversees the employees who are in supply chain management, test support, instrumentation services and others.

Although Gulfstream announced the new plane in March, Spirit has been working on the program for about two years. It shipped the first thrust reverser unit to Rolls Royce’s German facility in April.

Rolls Royce will install it on the first engine and conduct engine performance testing in the coming weeks, Mayle said.

Mayle has a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s in business administration from Wichita State University.

He and his wife, Anne, have two daughters, Sandra and Carolyn. He likes to jog and is interested in photography and visual arts.

Rolls Royce was Spirit’s first non-Boeing customer. How important of a win was this for Spirit?

“It was very important for Spirit to demonstrate the confidence of another customer and be selected and perform well…. The design concepts would be applicable to (other) products as well.”

What else does it do for Spirit?

“It stretched our technical capabilities.
