How To Design an Age-Appropriate Room for Your Child

How to Design an Age-Appropriate Room for Your Child

Designing an age-appropriate room can be a daunting task, especially when children change and develop so quickly. One of the best things that a parent can do is remember to be flexible and understand your child. Choose a color palette that will be easy to work with changing furniture and changing favorites. Understanding how a child develops is key to creating a bedroom that is age-appropriate. So we will discuss different stages and what you can do to create an age-appropriate room in each stage of development.

Birth to One Year

This is a stage of extremely fast growth and development. When you look at a newborn it is amazing that in less than a year, most will be walking, crawling, sitting, saying a few words, and feeding themselves. Having interesting objects to look at and reach for are important for babies. Babies will also enjoy a mirror; as an added bonus most children enjoy playing with mirrors up through age 8 or 9 so feel free to pick one that is a little more expensive because you know it will be around for a while. At this stage it is also important to have plenty of safe floor space. They will spend most of their time on the floor rolling and sitting and playing with toys.

One to Three Years

Children in this stage are learning how to dress themselves, and love to imitate their parents and older siblings, so make believe games of house are common. Encourage your children’s make believe games by providing them with a few simple props; a toddler chair, a small table or desk and perhaps a few plastic dishes will provide hours of fun. They are also learning motor skills like jumping, skipping, and hopping, so again a lot of floor space is necessary. Another way to help children at this stage is to get a closet organizer that allows you to hang the child’s clothes at their level. Learning how to get dressed on their own is an important life skill during this stage and it is much more likely that they will develop this skill if they can reach their clothes. Children at this age also love to draw and display their creations. You can easily turn a closet door into a chalkboard using chalkboard paint. Or you can set up a child chair and desk for them to use. You may want to consider covering the desk with laminating paper you can get at the craft store, that way if they get crayon or pencil on it you can just remove the paper and recover it. A magnet board is a great place for kids to display their creations and it is most likely something that the child will use for many years as they move from displaying their artwork to using it for keeping information for school.

Four to Six Years

During this time children learn how to talk. Provide them with plenty of books. This will encourage good speech development and will help them understand order of events. Children also go from side by side play to interactive play. Children at this age will still love drawing and art but you may need to upgrade to a larger table and chairs. Children love toys with lots of parts at this age such as legos and dolls with clothes. Provide them with plenty of space to store their toys. Make sure they are where they can be reached. You may also be tempted at this stage to put a TV or computer in your child’s bedroom so you don’t have to watch a favorite movie over and over with the child, but most experts greatly discourage this saying that it discourages interactive play and are activities that should be monitored closely.

Seven to Ten Years

Children at these ages develop definite likes and dislikes. Take cues from your child and set up a room that allows them to pursue what they like. Another tip is to give the child a place to display important items. Children at this stage like to be surrounded by favorite things.

One Bar Mitzvah, Hold the Camels

June 30th, 2008

We’ve all attended, or chuckled at the mention of, bar and bat mitzvahs that the hosts considered ultimate achievements in event design. Hollywood dramas where the bat mitzvah was dressed as Cleopatra and carried to the banquet on a litter borne by slaves; 80s era mega-productions where the bar mitzvah, dressed as Luke Skywalker, fights a choreographed battle with Darth Vader complete with special lighting and sound effects; or the relatively low-key affairs where the theme is simply football …but the entertainment is the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

In the quest to create a memorable event, bat mitzvah parents have hosted medieval jousts, roller derbys, and space launches. They’ve recreated Vesuvius erupting over Pompeii, Studio 54, and the hanging gardens of Babylon. They’ve hired troupes of Polynesian fire dancers, Chinese acrobats, robot dogs, Tony Bennett, and the entire touring company of Grease .

It would be easy to be cruel about all this - the misspent fortunes and misdirected energy. But at the heart of all the excess is a very natural, human, parental desire to make the appropriate fuss, to express what words alone cannot seem to convey. To say…via camels, flaming headdresses, and lightsabers…

This child is ours! And, isn’t he simply incredible?!

And rightly so. There are few enough occasions when you can get up and unabashedly declare how proud you are of your kids. Once you’re in the teen years, few enough occasions, frankly, when you will even feel like it. This is their moment to shine…and yours to gaze in wonder.

How do you make the most of it and capture all the magic and majesty of this once-in-a-lifetime experience? In the past, there were two schools of thought: Keep it simple, meaningful and sincere…and risk having an event that feels drab, skimpy, and underwhelming. Or - bring on the camels! - adopt an outrageous theme and go to town with the decorating and entertainment. That approach fails in its own way by producing events that are dazzling while you’re there, but that digest emotionally like fine pastry. Delicious on the lips, but almost totally lacking in substance, spiritual nourishment and stick-to-your-ribs memorability.

People who consider themselves religious have shunned glamour because they think big bashes with themes trivialize and overshadow the bar mitzvah experience. The glamorous folk have shied away from being too religious because they fear it will suck the life out of an otherwise fabulous party!

How happy they will all be to discover there’s a new integrated way to go: MitzvahChic, the notion that the mitzvah - the good works and the meaning - can be fused with high style. More than just fused. MitzvahChic holds that the meaning and the joy, artfully expressed, are what make the celebration magical. MitzvahChic is a blueprint for how a family can have an amazing bar mitzvah experience and use their emotion to electrify their party.

Anyone can hire a decorator to create some mind-altering backdrop; what makes a bar mitzvah truly wonderful is the way it expresses who you are as a family and how this very special event - already experienced by millions before you - is still somehow uniquely your own. Have an experience that is soul-satisfying and that works on every level by being fun, poignant, cool, moving, exciting and completely unforgettable. Enter the MitzvahChic zone and have an absolutely perfect bar or bat mitzvah.

Why Parenting Information Is Important In A Nuclear Family?

June 29th, 2008

There are countries where the word ‘family’ implies not only the husband, wife and the children, but much beyond that. It also included the husband’s or sometimes the wife’s parents, brothers and/or sisters, their spouses and their children all living under one roof. This is what they call ‘joint family’ or ‘extended family’. The families where only a husband, a wife and children form a unit are called nuclear families.

What is Parenting Information used for?

Sometimes, people become parents pretty early in life; sometimes, they become parents quite late in life. In either case, they are seeking parenting information to help them raise their children in the best possible manner. There a number of issues that come up while bringing up a baby and each of these need issue-pertinent advice. Unless, the parents speak to a professional or an experienced parent, they are not likely to get the right answers to their dilemmas.

Those who live in the ‘extended’ or ‘joint’ families do not have so much trouble in finding help, because help comes from the other members of the family including the grandparents who have a wealth of experience in child-rearing. However, for those who live in a nuclear family, there are the many websites giving parenting information which can help them.

There are many sources for parenting information, such as magazines, websites, chat forums, medical practitioners, social workers, psychiatrists, etc. Not all these sources can be accessed by everybody. The most popular source of parenting information remains the internet. There are thousands of parenting information websites which not only give accurate and step-by-step advice on issues that come up while bringing up a child, they also offers live chat, and interaction with experienced people and/or experts on any such issue that pertains to child bearing and rearing.

People are finding these websites really useful, because they are accessible at any time of the day or night and they provide invaluable insights into the aspects of parenting. There are many issues that cannot be addressed via media. For those types of the problems, one should go to the friends, older relatives and so on.

Gathering parenting information at the right time can save one a lot of mental agony and tension. Besides, bringing up a child is a huge task which is extremely difficult without some expert advice at one point in time or the other. Many crises can be averted if one can have access to proper parenting information when needed.

Dr. April Davall is webmaster of goodparentingskill.com http://goodparentingskill.com , which goal is to to give you good information about parenting and good parenting skills. You can learn and print out almost anything about parenting and good parenting skills. Large site, lots of info. Welcome to visit.

The Seduction of Junk Food

June 29th, 2008

News Extract: Sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks are the most common beverages American kids buy from school vending machines, concludes a Harvard School of Public Health study…these findings suggest that school vending machines and fast-food restaurants make independent contributions to total (sugar-sweetened) beverage intake that increase with repeated exposure or use… (Original news “Sweet Drinks Are Kids’ Top Choice at School” can be found at: news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20061011/hl_hsn/sweetdrinksarekidstopchoiceatschool http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20061011/hl_hsn/sweetdrinksarekidstopchoiceatschool )

Our Comments:

With our daily exposure to fast-food restaurants and vending machines which can instantly satisfy a plethora of cravings, our mind has been subconsciously trained to look for these round-the-corner quick fixes.

In addition to the ubiquitous fast-food restaurants and vending machines, another form of such negative ‘food seduction’ which we face daily is our store of junk food and snacks (eg. chocolate bars, potato chips, candies) in our kitchen cabinets and office drawers for emergency situations (nopes…not terrorist attack or nuclear war).

A simple change to gear ourselves to a healthier lifestyle is to remove all the unhealthy junk food that we store up in our house, car or workplace. If you find it a waste to throw them away, donate them to charity or give them to a friend who is going to have a party.

On your next grocery shopping, make a list of things you need to buy (make sure those junk food are not in the list) and buy only those items. This is a key requisite in your journey to manage your junk food intake. A shopping list helps you gather your needs at home; away from the colourful packets of junk food that trigger the buy-me-not hormone in you.

While it is good to remove such temptations, total abstinence from such junk food by sheer willpower only temporarily alleviates the problem. You need to learn how to plan and manage your nutrition healthily.

And the good news is you do get to eat some junk food as part of our programme. Learn the simple steps in transforming your nutrition plan now. Our health programme will teach you how to eat for better health while still enjoying your meal!

Chavez On US Oil Find In Gulf Of Mexico; Result Of Leak From Venezuela

June 29th, 2008

President Chavez of Venezuela, responding to the Chevron discovery of new oil reserves in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which more than double America’s known reserves, stated, “What do these gringos mean - new oil reserves? These oil reserves are the result of an oil leak from Venezuela.”

A reporter asked, “How have you been able to determine that, President Chavez?”

“No problem,” Chavez said, reaching into his pocket. “I have an oil-pressure gauge that I carry with me at all times, and I check the pressure in Venezuela’s oil wells every single day.”

He held up the implement. “See, an oil-pressure gauge. So one day last week, I noticed a drop. Next thing I know, Chevron reports a big find. I demand that the imperialist US plug the leak or I’ll say even more nice things about Castro.”

President Bush, when queried about Chavez’s position, said, “As you know, I have been a champion of American oil independence, and it’s a poor loser like Chavez who makes me advocate it. Here’s what I say back.”

At this point, he reached into a presidential pocket and pulled out an American-made oil-pressure gauge. “I have my little measuring device, too, and I have determined that all the oil pressure in Venezuela is actually the result of a leak from the Gulf of Mexico. So I demand that Chavez plug the wells in his own country and start to buy oil from us. I also demand a complete refund for all the oil we bought from Venezuela before we found out it came from America.”

How will the high-pressure debate work out? We are, it seems, at the mercy of time and the highly competitive effort of drilling for dollars.

Health Food

June 29th, 2008

Does your kid often eat junk food? Chances are, the answer to that one is a resounding yes because, as all parents know, children everywhere in the world absolutely love junk food such as hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. Like most parents, you probably want to wean your child away from junk food (or at least lessen his intake of it) and reinforce his diet with healthy food such as grains, vegetables, fruits and nutrient-rich foods such as meat, beans, fish and nuts.

Here are some tips to help you achieve just that. The basic strategy is to make eating healthy food fun for the kids. You probably can even think of more ways to use this strategy when feeding your child.

(1) The Sneak Attack.

Sneak in those fruits and vegetables with a type of food that your child really enjoys. One example would be making muffins out of bananas or apples. If your kids like pizza, you can sneak in a wide variety of vegetables in there that your youngsters probably won’t even notice. Another tack is to arrange the food in creative ways that will appear funny and play-like to your childe. For instance, you can arrange the food creatively on a plate or make food stand at attention like people.

(2) Funny Name Game.

Kids below the age of four always fall for this one. It’s called the funny name game and involves giving healthy foods like fruits and vegetables funny names and conjuring up interesting stories involving the food. Obviously, many of these stories will conclude with the food being gobbled up by the giant child or having the food run for cover to avoid an alien attack by ducking into a big cave that also happens to be your kid’s mouth.

(3) The Taste Test.

The main reason kids don’t like vegetables is that they can’t stand the taste. Hence, if you can add things kids love like peanut butter to celery or some ranch dressing to broccoli, your kids may go for those veggies.

The main thing is to be creative about feeding your food. I’m sure you can look into your kitchen and discover your own way to make eating healthy food a fun experience.

Child Nutrition

June 29th, 2008

Like an adult, every child needs appropriate amounts of calories, proteins, minerals, and vitamins to grow. The new Food Guide Pyramid Guidelines outline the amount of grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meats or beans people should eat daily. Children between the ages of four and six can usually have serving sizes recommended for adults, while younger children, who have smaller stomachs and lower nutritional needs, need smaller amounts of food. But apart from consuming the right quantity, parents should keep in mind that exposure to a wide variety of healthful foods early in a child’s life can set the stage for more variety later. Since children are often reluctant to try new foods and would be happy eating the same foods every day, the role of the parent is that of a guide towards a healthy and nutritional food lifestyle.

First of all, it is important for growing children to get the full range of important nutrients, especially protein, iron, calcium, and vitamin A. Although appetite variations are considered by experts as normal and might increase during times of rapid growth, or diminish during periods of slow growth, the general rule of thumb is that a 3 year old needs not more than 1,300 calories daily, a 10 year old around 2,000 and an adolescent may require as many as 2,800 depending on the height, weight and daily activity level.

- Fruits and Vegetables: Have always available in the fridge, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that your kids can chew in case they are suddenly hungry or in-between lunches. Remember to keep fruit juice on one service daily since the sugar this drink contains has a lot of ‘hidden’ calories. Broccoli, carrots, and vegetables with bright colors, usually attract children’s attention and help them fill their stomachs with something healthy instead of a bag of fried potato chips.

- Dairy products: Foods that are rich in calcium are essential for children and adults helping them build and maintain strong bones. Low fat milk and fat-free dairy products should be served daily and kids have to eat cheeses with 2-6 grams of fat per ounce. The needed calcium can also enter your child’s organism if he or she consumes orange juice and eats yogurt. Treats made with frozen yogurt and fruits, or milkshakes made with low-fat milk are always welcomed and provide the necessary sweet taste children usually crave.

- Grains: In fact, your child’s diet should be based on grains and starches. Whole grain products also contain iron that kids need and whole-wheat bread or pasta can give them the necessary grains for their bodies to function properly.

- Liquids: Remember to serve your child plenty of water and low-fat milk. Avoid sugary sodas and high-fat ice-cream milkshakes.

- Portions: Always serve appropriate portions and weight your kids often. Sugary foods or those containing high-fat ingredients should be generally avoided. Offer healthy snacks, like vegetables, fruits or a ball of whole-grain cereal and allow them to eat crackers with cheese and low-fat chocolate milk.

Finally, you have to check if your child is gaining the normal amount of weight as it grows up and that it exercises often. Outdoor activities and a healthy diet plan are enough to provide your kids with the necessary amount of energy they need and build strong bodies.

Introduction to Microsoft .NET Technology

June 29th, 2008

In 2000, Microsoft announced its .NET software environment, a new addition to Windows. The .NET (”dot - net”) environment is effectively a “virtual computer” that runs on a real computer, with the advantage that any program written for it will run on any computer which is running .NET.

One important aspect of the .NET strategy is its independence from a specific language or platform. Developers can create a .NET application in any .NET - compatible language and participate in the same software project writing code in the .NET languages in which they are most competent (such as Visual C++.NET, Visual Basic .NET, C#, Perl and others). Part of the .NET software environment includes Active Server Pages (ASP) .NET technology, which allows developers to develop applications for the Web.

The .Net architecture can exist on multiple platforms, further extending the portability of .NET programs. Additionally, the .NET software environment involves a new program development process that could change the way programs are written and executed, leading to increased productivity.

The most important component of the .NET architecture is Web Services, which are applications that can be used over the Internet. One example of a Web service is the tour operator’s flights booking system. The tour operator wanted to enable customers to book flights from the tour operator’s Web site. To do so, the tour operator needed to access the airline’s booking system. In response, an airline partner created a Web service that allowed the tour operator to access the airline’s database and make bookings. Web services enable the two companies to communicate over the Web, even if they use the different operating systems (the tour operator uses UNIX and the airline uses Windows). By creating a Web service, the airline can allow other tour operators to use its booking system without creating a new program.

The .NET strategy extends the concept of software reuse to the Internet, allowing developers to concentrate on their specialties without having to implement every component of every application. Instead, companies can buy Web services and devote their time and energy to developing their products.

The .NET strategy incorporates the idea of software reuse. When companies link their products in this way, a new user experience emerges. For example, an online store could buy Web services for online credit-card payments, user authentication and inventory databases to create an e-commerce Web site. The keys to this interaction are XML and SOAP, which enable Web service to communicate. XML gives meaning to data, and SOAP is the protocol that allows Web services to communicate easily with one another. XML and SOAP act together combining various Web services to form applications.

Another important concept in the .NET technology is universal data access. If two copies of a file exist (such as on a personal computer and a company computer), the less recent version must constantly be updated, this is called file synchronization. If the separate versions of the file are different, they are unsynchronized and could lead to serious error. Using the .NET data could reside in one central location rather than on separate systems. Any internet-connected device could access the data, which would then be formatted properly for use on access device (a desktop PC, a PDA or other device). Thus, the same document could be displayed and edited without the need to synchronise the data, because it would be up to date in central area.

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

June 29th, 2008

It’s happened to me. About a year ago, someone got a hold of my bank card numbers. Fortunately, the crook made some international purchase which immediately clued me in and my bank was quick to settle the whole thing. But most people aren’t so lucky. Identity theft is a serious crime that’s growing each year. Victims of identity theft can spend months, or even years, trying to repair a ruined credit history, which can compromise your chances of getting a new job, a bank loan, insurance or even rental housing. Follow these steps to help keep your identity safe:

Protect Your Credit Card Number When Making Purchases

Check your receipts after making a purchase with your credit or debit card. In most cases, the printed receipt hides all but the last 4 digits of your credit card account number, but some terminals still print receipts that show all 16 digits of your account number and the expiration date. If you get one of these receipts, black out the numbers entirely before throwing it away - this is all the information a thief needs to make charges using your card. You’re also permitted by law to hide the first 12 digits of your account number on any copies of the receipt that the seller keeps.

It’s especially important to keep tabs on your receipts at restaurants. Think about it - you pay for your meal and then leave the signed receipt on your table for the waiter to pick up. But in a busy restaurant, it’s easy for a potential thief to “accidentally” bump your receipt off the table (or just steal it) and get your information. If the restaurant’s receipt shows all of your account information, black out the first 12 digits of your credit card number before leaving the restaurant.

Do You Really Need To Give Your Social Security Number?

Be very stringent about who you give your social security number to. You’ll probably need to share your number when you apply for credit or for a bank account, but sometimes a store or an organization will want to use it as an ID number, simply to identify you within their system. This is not only dangerous - it’s illegal. The law says that social security numbers aren’t to be used as ID numbers. If you’re ever unsure about giving out your social security number, ask if there’s an alternative - there is in most cases.

Destroy Documents That Contain Sensitive Personal Information

Buy a paper shredder and use it to destroy any documents that contain credit card numbers, social security numbers, phone numbers, your date of birth and any other personal information before throwing them away. Any credit card offers should also be shredded - thieves can fill out the applications and open a line of credit without you ever knowing. Don’t think that throwing out these documents is enough - identity thieves aren’t above going through the trash to find information that can help them get credit in your name.

If The Worst Happens

If you do become a victim of identity theft, take the following steps immediately:

* Contact your credit card companies to let them know what’s going on, close your accounts and ask to have new cards issued to you.

* Place a fraud alert on your file with any one of the three major credit bureaus. The other two will be notified automatically.

* File a police report. You may need it to show to creditors as proof of the crime.

* File a complaint with the FTC, which maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for their investigations.

It’s not fun to think about identity theft, but in this age of technology, you can’t afford not to. Identity thieves get smarter every day - just think of the recent rash of companies announcing that their client databases have been hacked into, exposing personal information. Some things are out of your control, but there are some simple precautions you can take to keep your personal information secured. Keeping your identity safe may be one of the most important things you do for your financial future.

Way to Earn Extra Money Without Getting a Second Job

June 29th, 2008

Many times, people want to earn a little extra money, but don’t want to have to get a second job. The truth is, there are quite a few ways to earn extra money, and many of them don’t even require you to leave the house! Here are a few ways you can easily earn some extra money each month, with just a little time and effort:

· Use eBay: If you go through your house, you can look for things you don’t use or want anymore, and sell it on eBay. Also, if you do any crafts, or make something others might like, you can sell that as well. You don’t even have to leave your house except to ship the item, and it can be done any time of day or night.

· Have a yard sale: Usually these are held on weekends, but you can get rid of anything you don’t want or need anymore, and make some quick money.

· Answer Surveys: There are many companies out there that are willing to pay you in cash or prizes to fill out surveys on the web. They can be filled out at your convenience, and you can end up getting a decent amount of money for it. While some only pay a little bit, other surveys are willing to pay a lot more!

· Mystery Shop: There are also many companies out there that will let you do mystery shopping. Here you will go to a store or restaurant and pose as a regular customer, but you will take a look around and watch how the store is run, and how the employees are. You will not only sometimes get a meal or product for free, but you will also end up getting paid as well. It’s not a way to make a huge amount of money, but it’s great to end up with a little extra cash, or a free meal every now and then.

As you can see, there are many ways to earn extra money without getting a second job. The best part is that most of these can be done on your own schedule, without having to set certain hours. While they will not bring in as much as your first income, they will definitely help pay the bills, or give you some extra money for whatever you need it for.

Jessica Mele has been researching ways to help people save money without changing their lifestyles. Check out www.dreamlinesavings.com http://www.dreamlinesavings.com for more ways to save money easily, and to find great deals without doing any of the work. You can also find Survey and Mystery Shopping companies on the site as well.
