What are You Going to Race at Age 14?

UPLAND, Calif. — While most fourteen year-olds in America are consumed with starting high school, playing with their X-Box games and wishing Mom didn’t have to drive them to the mall; the ASA Speed Truck Challenge offers them the chance to climb behind the wheel of a 2,450-lb, 375-horsepower, V-8 Speed Truck that cruises at a mere 110 miles per hour on the straight-aways at race tracks like the TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale, known as “LA’s - 1/2 mile Super Speedway.”

Sounds a little far-fetched at the outset, however while NASCAR requires their lower level drivers across the country to be at least 16 to step into a race car, and their upper level series at age 18, the American Speed Association (ASA) and its premier traveling series on the West Coast; the ASA Speed Truck Challenge; welcomes any driver to join its ranks to be among some of the finest drivers in the country at only 14. “Most of our drivers have come up through the ranks of Karting, Bandoleros, and Legends,” says ASA Speed Truck Challenge president, Jay Rutherford. “Even at 14, they understand the basics of racing and how to respect the talents of other drivers on the track. In this series, we are able to redefine their driving talents and give them the true experience at a young age on as many as 10 different, varied size oval and road course race tracks in California, Arizona and Nevada. With that kind of understanding of different track conditions, truck setups and endurance of 100-lap features, I would put our rookies at the end of their first season up against anyone in the country,” explained Rutherford.

Add to the rush of driving their own Speed Truck and traveling over the West Coast, the thrill of learning to be interviewed and seen on national television at such a young age, preparing them for all aspects of what national sponsorship teams will expect out of a new driver. Now in its eighth year being nationally televised, the ASA Speed Truck Frequent Flyer Card Challenge gives these new drivers the …continue reading

NEW YORK: Celtics forward Paul Pierce has joined stars such as Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Giants quarterback Eli Manning on the roster of Steiner Sports.

The memorabilia company announced a deal with the NBA finals MVP on Tuesday for a line of collectibles that will include signed photographs from finals games, pictures with the MVP trophy and autographed No. 34 jerseys.

Other athletes in Steiner's stable include Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, former Steelers running back Franco Harris and former NHL star Mark Messier.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will graduate from Tennessee this month with a bachelor's degree in sports management, more than five years after he left the school to enter the NFL draft.

Witten completed the remaining 25 hours of his studies with the help of the school's Renewing Academic Commitment program.

Even by graduating late, Witten helps improve Tennessee's Academic Progress Report rating with the NCAA.

The report measures eligibility and retention of student athletes for every program at every Division I school. Programs risk losing scholarships and other restrictions if they're not graduating enough athletes.

BLACKBURN, England (AP) — New Blackburn coach Paul Ince doesn't want to be the only black manager in the Premier League.

“I think there should be more black players encouraged to go into management,” said Ince, who was introduced at Ewood Park on Tuesday. He is the first black Englishman to manage in the Premier League.

“(My appointment) is very important for black players who want to go into coaching and management,” he said. “Maybe the likes of Les Ferdinand and Sol Campbell will do so in the future.”

Ince was also England's first black captain, leading the national side on Instant Approval Credit Cards a 1993 tour of the United States.

Daily estimates she saves between $50 and $60 per trip by frequenting the discount grocer.

Rising food prices have sent more South Sound shoppers looking for deals.

As a result, local discount and surplus grocery stores have seen a noticeable uptick in business, they say. The stores specialize in selling manufacturers’ surplus food. And if you don’t mind eating cereal with Christmas packaging in June or a bag of chips that’s near its better-if-eaten-by date, then you can save some serious cash.

“We’re seeing a lot more first-time shoppers,” said Lyn Lowe, who owns the Grocery Outlet on Sixth Avenue with her husband, Ken. “There’s more people coming in saying, ‘We’ve got to figure out how to make this budget work.’”

FOOD PRICES SPIKE

You may not be buying more, but your total grocery bill has likely increased over the past year.

Food prices across the country spiked by more than 4 percent in 2007, the biggest jump in 17 years. And they’re set to escalate another 6 percent in 2008, though some items, including eggs and milk, have gone up much more.

Several factors are driving the price increases, according to Brian Todd, president of The Food Institute, a New Jersey-based food industry information service. High fuel prices make food more expensive to transport, the devalued dollar has ramped up U.S. exports of food, and more of the corn crop is being used to produce ethanol.

“It’s been the perfect storm,” Todd said.

To weather it, shoppers are finding ways to stretch their budget.

For many, that means frequenting grocery stores that specialize in discount or liquidated food.

California-based Grocery Outlet has seen the number of customers grow at its 124 stores and has seen their hauls increase. The latter is likely due to shoppers consolidating Frequent Flyer Cards grocery trips – going less frequently …continue reading
