Red Sox pitcher has no-hitter vs. RoyalsBOSTON — Jon Lester can now add pitching a no-hitter to his already amazing list of accomplishments.The 24-year-old lefty, who survived cancer to pitch the clincher of Boston’s 2007 World Series victory, shut down Kansas City 7-0 on Monday night for the first no-hitter in the majors this season.Boston’s last no-hitter was pitched by Clay Buchholz, who shut down the Baltimore Orioles in just his second major league start last Sept. 1.
Pitcher honored: El Paso Diablos pitcher Chris Thompson was named Monday as the American Association’s Pitcher of the Week.Thompson, El Paso’s closer, was 1-0 with two saves last week, allowing no runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. The Irvington, Ala., resident was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 21st round of the 2004 MLB draft. He played two seasons in the Diamondbacks organization and one season with the Washington Nationals before signing with the Pensacola Pelicans last season.
Golfer wins truck: Master Sgt. Tom Craig made a hole-in-one Sunday that won him a new Toyota Tacoma pickup at VFW Post 812’s second annual Martin “Ski” Dombroski Golf Tournament. Craig hit his first hole-in-one on the 173-yard seventh hole at Underwood Golf Complex at Fort Bliss.Craig, a combat medic with 21 years of Army experience, will graduate Thursday from the Seargent Majors Academy and will leave Fort Bliss on Friday for a new assignment at Walter Reed Army AdvertisementMedical Center in Washington, D.C.Dick Poe Toyota sponsored the pickup giveaway promotion for the tournament.
Slam ‘N Jam set: The 2008 Slam ‘N Jam 3-on-3 basketball tournament is set for Saturday and Sunday at Cohen Stadium. The tournament, which benefits the Boys & Girls Club of El Paso and the El Paso Job Corps, is open to players ages 10-adult. Entry fee is $99 per team for all divisions except Top Gun, which is $125 per team and features a $500 prize.
