Researchers Unable to Agree on Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress …

Singapore, Singapore, 06/30/2008 - Studies exploring potential predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) following major trauma have resulted in varied conclusions.

While a number of risk factors such as injury severity, demographic factors and compensation-related factors have been identified, none is strong enough to reliably predict which patient will develop the disorder.

PTSD is characterized by flashbacks of the event, anxiety, and social withdrawal. Victims of major trauma are at significant risk of developing PTSD, with about 15% developing the disorder within a year of the injury.

A study in the July issue of ANZ Journal of Surgery titled “Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following Major Trauma” by Professor Ian Harris et al. argues that the lack of consistency of previous PTSD studies is a result of methodological flaws such as selection bias, and poorly defined diagnostic criteria.

The authors investigated the association between injury severity, demographic and compensation-related factors with the development of PTSD and found that the disorder was also independently associated with having an unsettled compensation claim, their use of lawyer services and the placement of blame on others for the injury.

Another study in the same issue of ANZ Journal of Surgery claims that there is no existing risk factor model that enables an accurate prediction of how patients will be affected psychiatrically in the aftermath of the injury.

Author of “Predictors of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder after Major Injury”, Professor Alexander Cowell McFarlane says, “The inconsistencies in PTSD predicators suggest the pivotal role of health-care professionals in the identification of patients at risk of developing psychiatric disorders.”

He adds, “While risk factors should be considered, the traumatic events are sufficient Amex Platinum Card to elicit symptoms in the individuals. …continue reading

Urban Adolescents’ Postschool Aspirations and Awareness
Posted on: Wednesday, 25 June 2008, 03:02 CDT
By Scanlon, David Saxon, Karyn; Cowell, Molly; Kenny, Maureen E; Perez- Gualdron, Leyla; Jernigan, Maryam The young adult years (approximately the age when one leaves high school to age 23) are pivotal to adult life success. They are the years when adolescents typically assume dramatic increases in responsibility for self-direction in areas such as socialization, independent living, citizenship, employment, education, and mental and physical health. From initial experiences in those years, the young adult lays foundations for how his or her life will progress in various domains. The purpose of the present study is to document urban adolescents’ understanding of their aspirations and means for reaching them in their young adult years while still early in their high school years. The authors investigate whether there are differences based on if the students have a learning disability. Keywords: transition; adolescent; urban education A young adult who, upon leaving high school, enters into employment, a postsecondary education to prepare for a profession, or a “churning process” of trying to determine what he or she would like to do (Osterman & Iannozzi, 1993, as cited in Lindholm, 2006), is more likely to establish initial well-being financially and in independent living than peers who do not. Population statistics indicate that those who earn a college degree are more likely to have year-round, full-time employment, earning on average $23,000 more than a high school graduate (Olson, 2007), are better prepared for financial security in their adult years, and have healthier interpersonal relationships (Scanlon & Mellard, 2002). Yet the allure of foregoing postsecondary education to earn money immediately after high school is hard to resist for many young adults, particularly those growing up in poverty (Lindholm, 2006). The wellness industry is now reportedly a $500 billion dollar industry - representing a 250% growth in just a 5 year period (The Wellness Revolution, Paul Zane Pilzer, Wiley 2007). This meteoric growth is indicative of just how much individuals desire and are seeking a change to the status quo that has accepted stress, pressure, and lack of energy as a way of life. With this mind, Transformations Holistic Learning Center has announced an alliance with the Institute for Professional Empowerment Coaching (iPEC) to bring coaching and coach training to a large population of wellness seekers.

Voorhees, NJ (PRWEB) June 25, 2008 — Transformations Holistic Learning Center - founded last August with the vision of helping individuals, families, and communities actualize their highest potential while contributing to the greater good - has announced an alliance with the Institute for Professional Empowerment Coaching (iPEC) - the national leader in coach training and personal and professional development headquartered in Shrewsbury, NJ.

The alliance was initiated by Scott Rosen, Transformations President and CEO, who decided to look for a coaching organization that emulated the same values and goals as Transformations. Transformations is the Delaware Valley's premiere education resource, offering world-class motivational speakers and programs and diverse services which help individuals bring balance to the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual parts of their lives. After interviewing many schools, Rosen personally chose iPEC and was amazed at the similarities between the two companies.

Bruce D Schneider, MCC, Founder and CEO of iPEC couldn't agree more, stating that "Transformations is absolutely aligned with our mission of raising the consciousness of the world, one person at a time. Everyone — every single person — has significantly more potential within FLIGHT 29 DOWN dvd themselves than they realize. Our Life …continue reading

Summer books that mean business

June 21st, 2008 by tanailee

Summer’s here: Time for basking on the beach with a good book. And with so many of us in “staycation” vacation mode, that may mean traveling no farther than the backyard and plunking down with a meaty best-seller or a riveting murder mystery. Good enough.

But amid these queasy, uneasy economic times, why not indulge in some financial brain food, as well?

Here’s a sample of some of the best personal-finance books that have come across our desk in the past year or so:

“The Best Investment Advice I Ever Received” by Liz Claman, Business Plus ($12.99). Don’t take just one great investor’s advice: Try a dozen. And many more, including Warren Buffett, Jim Cramer, Suze Orman, Steve Forbes, Vanguard’s John Bogle. The author, a CNBC business-news anchor, has culled some of the best investment advice from some of the biggest financial gurus of our era.

Claman, who grew up watching her physician father pore over the daily newspaper stock listings, said she wrote the book to give people like her dad the insights from Wall Street insiders.

Quote: “Don’t look at stocks like a marriage. When you buy a stock, you are just supposed to date it, sell it when it’s up and, whatever you do, don’t marry it.” (Howard Lutnick, CEO, Cantor Fitzgerald)

“True Self, True Wealth” by Peter Cole and Daisy Reese, Atria Books ($16.95). As local experts in “financial psychology,” this husband-and-wife team unpack the emotional baggage that often thwarts our best intentions to manage money wisely. Based on their experiences as family therapists as well as finance experts (he’s a chartered financial consultant), the couple spell out 10 “money scripts” — the habits and attitudes inherited from our parents — that can play havoc with our financial lives as adults.

Once you’ve untangled those knotty issues, the book’s second half offers practical, common-sense ways to achieve financial and emotional security. It’s Citibank Gold Credit Card the perfect marriage of money and …continue reading

More development planned for Hoboken waterfront

The Waterfront Corporate Center, known as the Wiley building for its tenant, the publishing company of that name, is getting a third building, the New York Times is reporting.

Though the developer, SJP Properties, does not have a tenant yet, the Times notes that the company is seeking “a major tenant” and that “companies from Manhattan have made visits in the last few weeks.”

The article discusses how the commerical real estate market in New Jersey, as elsewhere, is slumping, but that the Hudson County waterfront - often a safe port in an economic storm - programming is doing better than anywhere else in the Garden State.

Never too late

Angela Castorena didn’t finish high school.

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1980s with only a mother and a brother around didn’t really allow time for academics.

In fact, she didn’t make it out of the ninth grade, but now she will be one of 450 Erie County residents to formally receive their general-equivalency diplomas Tuesday night.

“I got into some things when I was about 14 that I really shouldn’t have,” Castorena said. “My family was pretty poor and dysfunctional at the time, and I just couldn’t get focused on school.”

By the time she was 18, Castorena had been a high school dropout for four years and was about to have her first child.

She got married to Jesse Castorena in 1993 and had three more children with him while still in California. Angela Castorena, her husband, and their four children survived the rough times and eventually moved to North East in 2002.

They chose this area because Castorena’s mother, Darlene, had married David Woods of North East in 1995.

Castorena and her young family fell in love with the relatively peaceful child-raising environment of northwest Pennsylvania. Jesse became assistant manager at a local Advance Auto Parts store while Angela stayed home in North East to raise their four children.

For five years, she got her children ready for school in North East every morning and helped them with their studies in the evening as best she could.

But for the 34-year-old Castorena, something was still missing.

Her youngest daughter finished elementary school in spring 2007. That’s when Castorena saw the opportunity she had been waiting for.

“I had tried a few different times since dropping out 20 years ago to go back and get my GED, but for whatever reason it never worked out,” Castorena said. This past fall, she enrolled at the R. Benjamin Wiley Learning Center, 1006 W. 10 St in Erie.

There she met Michelle Collins, who has FLIGHT 29 DOWN dvd taught at the Wiley Learning Center …continue reading
